A new beginning

Since GYBO started, we have invested many thousands of pounds worth of time, effort and money in bringing the agency up to what it is today.

Everyone who has contributed their time and ideas to this project, believes in it and values what GYBO can offer to live music and the talented and dedicated musicians who create it.

Whilst I (the proprietor) and my colleagues have gladly contributed a lot of our own resources over the past five years, we cannot go on running this project out of our own pockets - both real and metaphorical.

Both sadly and realistically, we now have to make this agency earn its keep, pay its rent and grow.

If we don't become commercially viable, GYBO will disappear and five years of devoted effort will be lost.

GYBO has supported many bands in their development towards commercial viability. Now we have to take a dose of our own medicine and apply our advice to ourselves, and make GYBO commercially viable.

That is not about making money, becoming rich or being consumed with a desire for wealth - it's about being committed to live music, to bands and to the musicians we work with.

Like bands, GYBO has to make ends meet; we have spent five years delving into our pockets to keep this project going but our future will only be assured if we become commercially viable.

With this in mind, we are making changes to the way that GYBO operates, as from 1st March. The main change will be a fundamental shift away from doing a lot of things that are free to charging for services.

Just as bands must secure fees for their performances, we must GYBO secure fees for what we do.

Many bands have fed back to us that they value what we do and have thanked us for supporting them and helping them out. This encourages us to feel that we have a set of skills and a body of knowledge and above all a sincere commitment that is worth something.

We therefore look to our bands to support us by paying for what we do for them. We will charge only what we need to in order to stay viable. The backbone of our clientele is unsigned bands and they do not make a great deal of money from their work.

Hence, we are not under any illusions about how difficult it will be for us to make ends meet. But if we do not become financially viable, we will be unable to continue.

From 1st of March, therefore, we will charge for what we do at the most reasonable cost we can afford.

We have contact with over 3000 UK rock bands, covering all styles within the genre. We are also building up our database of venues and promoters who book bands.

We have chosen NOT to offer automated registration procedures, because it takes human judgment to determine whether a band meets our selection criteria.

We want venues and promoters to trust Get Your Band On to provide them with quality bands. We would like the music industry to see GYBO as a kite mark of quality for live rock music.

We are also developing relationships with record labels, putting forward bands that we think deserve signing.
